Singers cannot change the lyrics and especially the melody (even just a single note), not necessarily because they fear the author’s disapproval, but because the songs are pre-written and the singer simply sings them exactly as the author wrote them. Arbitrarily changing the lyrics and music will distort the work, ruining the song’s content, especially during live performances!
 
Music will be distorted if a singer changes the lyrics and melody of an original song without prior preparation (which is creating a new arrangement based on the original).
